How would you feel about hosting a foreign exchange student in your home? I am directing this question not only at Americans but at all nationalities who might read the question and have thoughts about the subject. This year my family is hosting two students, one from Germany and one from Hong Kong, both girls. In the past we have hosted two boys from Germany, one boy from Korea, and one girl each from Germany and Hong Kong. This is our third full year to host, and we also hosted for a partial year. Our son was a foreign exchange student in Germany for a year. We have had exceptional kids to work with. The experiences have been incredible and we are connected to all of our past and present kids. Would you consider hosting a child from a foreign land? I'm not recruiting, although my wife is coordinating placements and trying to recruit families in our local area. (South Texas.) I was just interested in seeing what sort of response I would get from the Yahoo! Answers community. I expected some people to respond as you have, and I also expected some to say "no way," and others to simply be curious about the programs. From experience I can tell you that if you like young people and enjoy interacting with other cultures it is an experience difficult to match other than by doing a lot of traveling on your own.

Are unrealized foreign exchange gains and losses taxable? For example, a corporation borrows money denominated in a foreign currency during the year. As of year end, the foreign currency has decreased in value against the US dollar, thus for accounting purposes the loan is adjusted to its US dollar equivalent and an unrealized foreign exchange gain is recorded. Would this gain be taxable or is it only taxable when realized (i.e. when the loan is paid)? I am asking specifically for the United States federal tax rules. I am familiar with the Canadian tax rules for foreign exchange but can't find any information on the US rules.

So yeah.. are there any opportunities to study abroad in UP Manila or Diliman?
How hard is it to be a foreign exchange student? So, there's this girl in my art class from Germany, and I've always thought it would really really cool if I could be a foreign exchange student in another country for maybe half a year to a year. It would have to be an English speaking country, because I don't speak anything else fluently. It's just an idea - I haven't talked to my parents or anything about it yet. So I'm guessing it would be a lot of money, but like, approximately how much? And would anyone recommend doing this or not doing this? Help? Oh, and I'm a sophomore in high school.

But the money problem still lies and I don't know how to save $12,000 by my sophomore year. Since I am 14 I can't hold a part time job, because no one will hire anyone that young. I don't think asking people for money will help nor fund raising because don't they take the majority of the profit anyway? Any ideas?
I'm hosting a foreign exchange student and need a bit of advice? I'm currently hosting a foreign exchange student from Germany- and I hate to say it, but I am socially inept. I'm not a talker, I have little experience with treating guests, and she's also incredibly quiet since she's not accustomed to English. My German is insufficient to create any worthwhile small talk as well. Can anyone give me any tips on connecting with a foreign exchange student? >< I really want to be friends with her, but I have no clue how to approach the situation. And it really doesn't help that we both don't appear to indulge in conversation! And yet it makes me feel terrible just to let her sit on the bed and read and let her be bored....

Can you usually communicate with the person prior to meeting them so that it won't be as awkward? Any info you have would be great...thank you!

I am also from FL, USA. If you could answer and help me you would be my hero:)

If anyone has any experience with this, please give me your opinion. =]
how to keep a foreign exchange student from being placed with a host family? I know someone that is getting a foreign exchange student. The problem is that they never did a background check on him. He is a drunk, abusive and has some sexual tendencies against kids. Children services said that he can not be around or house any children under the age of 18. Also the police have said that. He has been in jail for batery, theft, drunk, and others. The girl that they are getting is 15, very pretty, comes from good home, skinny and wears the typical short shorts and shirts that show her belly button. I don't want her to get hurt. What can I do?
