If I learn Spanish should i buy a latin american spanish course or Euro spanish course ? Because my Close friends come from South America and their Spanish is quiet difference from European spanish and I would really love speaking Spanish to them, but what course should I pick, can any spanish speaker help me
What Euro countries love Latin guys? I'm a South American born and raised in New York, I'm taking a Euro tour next year and wanted to know where in Europe do women love us Latino guys the most....... Just wondering!?!?!?!? chaos!
So is Obama truly the definition of todays All-American boy? Afro-Euro-Asian-Latin? He's not just black and not just white...........He's a little bit of everything! I hope that soon people will grow up and realize that there is much more to all of us than what we can see on the outside and stop being so racist and stupid! Do you think we'll ever be able to put Obama's race to rest before his term is up?
If we had a Euro championship which was Germanic vs. Celtic vs. Latin vs. Slavic vs. Hellenic who would win? No offense Basques!or Finns If players had to play for their predominant ethnicity of those major European ethnicities, who would win. No mercs allowed only what existed in Europe for the last 2000 years. Those of the near eastern origins would have to be considered Hellenic. Spain isn't necessarily Latin - Torres is a blond. France isnt' necessarily Germanic. Holland and Belgium are pretty much mixed Germanic and Celtic...with a tiny bit of Latin. This is based on majority ethnic origins. I would say it ends in PKs between Germanics and Latins....but who knows....
Is the Latin Quater a nice area to stay in? I found a nice and cheap appartment to stay in, while in Paris. It's located in the Latin Quaret. Wondering if that is a nice area to stay in? Gonna cost me 50 euros per 2 nights.
Why are many White Hispanics racist against non Whites in Latin America? There are many White Spaniards,Argentinians,Cubans, etc who abhor the peoples of Latin America who are Black,American Indian,Asian,Mestizo, and Mulatto.Unfortunately the majority of the rich people tend to be the Euro Hispanics(Hispanics who are of pure European ancestry, mainly from Spain,Italy,Portugal etc...)
Are there really such great culture differences from Americans to Europeans or Latin Americans? I love my husband, and adore him to pieces. He is the all American man, and I am a Euro-Latin mix, and he always finds everything I do so unique so strange, he even calls it weird. I have heard it so many times, it is starting to make me feel insecure. I tell him you are just plain, ordinary, vanilla, which I love that he is like that, he's says I am very spicy and colorful, can this bond really work, should I try to be vanilla for him? I get hurt when he says I am weird, and what makes me weird, that I cook Mexican style or Italian? that I like European styled fashion and home decor? He is wonderful and how do I tell him nicely not to make me feel insecure or weird.
why the flights are cheaper from Europe to Latin america than the other way around? I am wondering, why is this phenomenon, similar dates, exact period of time and the price is average difference of 200 Euros in the purchase price of a flight ticket, when traveling from Latin america ->Europe and when flying Europe-> Latin America is cheaper
Which Latin American country is the safest to take a total immersion spanish class? I'm interested in antiguities as opposed to rain forests or beaches. The exchange rate for the US dollar is a factor as well. I was interested in Spain but the Euro is climbing. I considered Peru until I read the US State Dept. report. Where can I go that's safe and affordable?!
will the World Cup of Clubs CUP stay in Latin America this year? don't give me any crap about European teams not taking the tournament seriously. (Euro's these days LOL) i think Boca juniors might win this won. AC Milan is my favorite, but they aren't looking so good.
Is it time we stop classifying ourselves as African-American, Latin-American, Asian-American etc.? If you agree we shouldn't stop classifying ourselves then why cant we have European-American, Euro-African-Latin mix-American, American Indian, French,Irish-American mix as choices? How many generations of family does it take to drop the hyphen?
Why is the USA an " Economic Mecca " for Latin-American immigrants ? Europeans are not interested in comming to America because Euro value is higher than U.S dollar. Europeans Immigrate to Mexico and other Latin-American countries in search of Culture and Knowledge.
Why MANY EURO-PEOPLE 'ANTIPATHIZES' THEMSELVES? EURO-NORDICS (English's, Scandinavian's, Germanic's) antipathizes EURO-LATINS (Spanish's, Portuguese's, Italian's, Greek's, etc.)... Why do English's antipathizes Irish's? … WALLOONS antipathizes FLEMISH ... In the movie "L'auberge espagnole" the character Anne Sophie says "Barcelona like a third world city" and the character Xavier retorts, saying it is racist // There's another scene where the character William [Kevin Bishop] says that in Spain people speak very "Olé, Olé!" and France is "Oui, Oui!" in a biased way -> Who here has seen this movie?
are spanish-americans from spain latinos or hispanics or both?? it is a european country in the latin union,? i know that spanish is a major language in latin america and there are large portions of europeans in south america. but are they euro versions of latin americans??
What type of Spanish is taught at American High Schools? Is it Euro Spanish or Latin Spanish? Thanks in advance! Thanks everyone for all your answers. I'm assuming that Castilian/Castellano is taught at High Schools. Thanks
If your Spainish would that mean your european/euro-descent also saying that you caucasian? i believe if your spanish your white... but let me also say for the latin american countries most of the ppl are mixed with african blood and or with native blood and or white aka spanish
How much credibility has 0bama lost because he campaigned as a moderate but is ruling as a hard left Marxist? Not to mention his failures including trillions in pork laden political payback, Crap and Tax, 0bamacare, getting rolled by the Euros, the Latins and embarrassed by N. Korea, Iran and Scotland.... Oh - and add his 44 and growing Commune of socialist, Marxist and Communist Czars
Latin American soccer or European soccer? I choose Latin American soccer. Its faster and more skillful and exciting. European soccer is a bit more technical and defensive; I find it more boring! haha I can't watch a full Euro game, don't ask me why, but I watched almost every Copa America game! Spain and France for the Euro! Marco: sorry dude, but no one said anything about the MLS, notice I sadi Latin American soccer, if I said MLS vs European, people would think I was high bro.
Why is France trying to look different from the rest of Europe's teams? Do they think that makes them cool? If you look at the rest of Europe at Euro 2008, throw in England as well, the players all look pretty much the same White and Spanish Latin features, along with a couple of Negros. But France trys to be special by looking different from the rest. I laugh. BTW there is no merit in reporting my question and getting it deleted. There is no direct racism or offensiveness in my question.
which are the three most expensive cities in latin america? I mean a city that you expend a lot of dollars or euros
what would you think about all latin america having a same coin, like Euros? please if you're not familiar with latin america don't answer alot of them are actually pretty similar
What is the name of this popular song? I've been searching for this song from many months now cant seem to find it. I always hear it during football matches & so i think it is/was the official song of euro cup or FIFA. Its lyrics are mostly latin & sounds like a group or a crowd of people are singing it. It's lyrics are : Ole le Ola la nache avenge nache avega... The lyrics are not very correct but thats what it sounds like. If anyone can help me i'll be very thankful. May god bless you.

Most Latin Americans consider themselves white yet US Latinos consider themselves "brown"- why? Why is it that most Latin Americans consider themselves white even if they're only like 1/8 European while the rest is black or Indian, yet so many US Latinos consider themselves "brown" (like brown's even a race)? In Latin America white is the cool thing to be, the thing that everyone strives for and checks on the census. It's just one big contest to boast about who has the most Euro blood. Yet so many US Latinos go the opposite route and choose to segregate from and create unnecessary tension with the non-Hispanic whites. They could just as easily be "white" seeing as many of them ARE white and Indian (note how non-rez Anglo Native Americans and mestees are just treated like white people). Which leads to another question- why are so many Latinos so hung up on racial identity when you think we'd in fact be *less* obsessed with it since most of us are mixed anyway and therefore would waste less time on that and more on our individual selves or nationality? My mom's Chicana (mestiza- Spanish & Native American) and my dad's Irish-American, so I could call myself white if I wanted to or even brown (the two terms becomes so broad and confusing) but I don't think of myself as either- I just think of myself as me. As far as ethnicity is concerned- I think of myself as Irish and Mexican…and proud, not to mention American...not a color. To embrace actual cultures is fun...to focus on a color and embrace a "raza" is lame and meaningless.
Forget Europe this is Latin America vs Asia baby!? VIVA LATINO AMERICA! Uruguay crushed the hosts today 3-0! And they held last World Cup's runner ups 0-0 even with a man down! Argentina defeated Nigeria even with their keepers amazing skills. Brazil defeated the suprisingly good North Korean side. Chile defeated Honduras Paraguay drew against the current world cup holders. Mexico drew against the world cup hosts. and Honduras unfortunately had to face another Latin American team. But Asia is also doing well: With South Korea defeating the 2004 Euro Cup winners Greece 2-0. Japan taking the win against Cameroon. And North Korea putting up a valiant effort against Brazil PS: Australia isn't Asia and should play in Oceania o.O Now tomorrow two of these regions giants shall meet! Argentina vs South Korea! This should be an amazing match! Thoughts? @JS: No because Australia physically is not in Asia:P It has nothing to do with race:P see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continents
why cant a white hispanic join kkk or a nazi group? there white of euro blood just because they come from latin america does not make them less white and no i dont want to join kkk or nazi group if that's what your thinking im just saying.
Isn't it Ironic that Argentina, the most westernized latin american country is also the most boring? I was watching some Argentine movie and those spanish-speaking crackaz are soooooo boring. The whole country looks like England, a gay, cultureless, Euro-city. Does Argentina even have any campesinos? Do they even have Campos? How is it that crackers have created THE most boring latin american country in history? Let's not forget, Argentines have THE gayest lisp ever, "como te paretheth? vothotroth hablaith con Jonath?" Argentina has no culture because it's a white country. If the latino country doesn't have indigenous or African influence, then it becomes a boring one.
Who do you think will be the first champions of the three new WWE brands coming up? 1st WWE Euro Champ? 1st WWE Japan Champ? 1st WWE Latin Champ?
what do you think happens to america in the future? hopefully there is peace for all people but i see the rest of the world making steady economic gains on america and then in the future our military might not be as strong. if in the future the american military and economy doesn't hold as much global weight what international solution can we find. do you think that america in the future along with australia, canada, and much of latin america join the european union (due to cultural similarities) and adopt the euro too?
Hotels in Latin Quarter in Paris: Which of these 4? I'm going to Paris in August for the first time and would like a reasonably nice (3 star) hotel in the Latin Quarter. Interested in being near tons of good cafes and walking distance to Notre Dame and the Seine, and possibly the Louvre. Which would be the best located hotel? All have AC. 1) Jardin de l'Odeon (7 rue Casimir Delavigne; metro: Odeon) - 102.5 Euros per night 2) Abbatial Saint Germain (46, blvd Saint Germain; metro: Maubert Mutualite)- 99 Euros per night 3) Hotel du Pantheon (19, place du pantheon; metro: Luxembourg RER) - 95 Euros per night 4) Hotel Saint Germain des Pres (36 Rue Bonaparte; metro: Saint Germain des Pres) - 112.5 Euros per night including breakfast Greatly appreciate it! Also interested in where there would be wine bars / bars / nightlife / cafes open late. I'm surprised at the answers about the hotel du pantheon - wouldn't a location closer to the Seine be preferable? please clarify - thank you.
Did you ever mistake a Latino mestizo for full-blooded Asian? I know a good number of European-Latin American native-Indian mixes who are mistaken for full-blooded Asians. Confused on why since mestizos look like mix of Euro and native and full-Asians don't normally look mix Euro and native.
Is being Greek considered being European? If not what is it considered being like latin,euro-asian,??? If not what would it be?

Why is my BF REALLY watching porn? I just read a similar question to this. My BF and I have been together for about 4 months. Of course like most ppl, the beginning we had sex it seemed alot more, and to me it seemed better than it is right now. I do understand we see eachother way more than we did when we were first together (pretty much everyday, all day) so it may just see less because we are together all the time. I have a high sex drive and I would like to have sex at least twice a day, but in the last couple of weeks it seems he's more interested in getting off on porn than ever.I caught him the act on night while I was getting ready to go out and it upset me because I felt I'm right here if want some than you need to come get it, ya know? but I understand why he didn't because I don't like to be bothered when I'm getting ready and after many attempts I guess he's finally accepted that. I have discussed him watching porn in the last few weeks a few times and each answer has been different, first it was because he said he really enjoys masturbating and because he just bought new porn and he wanted to watch it, the next the same thing than last night he told it was because sometime he likes to fantasize about porno chicks and that me and his porn were two seperate things or fantasies and it has nothing to do with me he just enjoys porn. I have no prob with porn, I watch it sometimes infact, I may not masturbate to it but I like to watch once in awhile. But I feel that hey your girlfriend is her if your horny than more than happy to satisfy the urge. I know it shouldn't but it's starting scratch at my self esteem, I'm not concieted, but I know to alot of ppl think I'm a beautiful girl, I'm very striking and unusual looking which I get that more than anything, I'm slim, fit,I don't have huge knockers like pretty much every porn star and he does have a thing for that so that could be areason, but than I understand why he stays with me than. and hey I know most porn stars are average looking or less (especially face wise) but I don't think thats what most guys are really looking at when they watch porn lol. Plus the women in his porn are so completely opposite of me that's what makes me really wonder, I'm mixed asian/latin/euro and all the girls he watches are white or black and qutie average or plain looking, nothing like tera patrick or that type which I would assume he'd be into since we're similar looking (minus the breasts). Also I think these girls resemble girls that he's been with in the past or are the type he's use to, see he's never had a girl like me before, which I figured.I've tried to discuss this with him and he doesn't understand why I would feel like this, he says your acting like it's another girl I'm seeing and it has nothing to do with how I fee about you, so I was just wondering am I really over reacting?or is porn his other girlfriend?

How much should I get if I would sell a book published in 1894 in Latin by Quintus Horatius Flaccus? Q. Horatius. Flaccus. Text in latin. Published in Paris: Librarie Hachette et C(ie); 79, Boulevard Saint-Germain, 79. 29232 - Imprimerie A. Lahure, rue de Fleurus, 9, a Paris. The book is in perfect state. I have paid only 2 euros. [bought it from an antique bookshop in Romania] I do not intend to sell it, I just wanted to find out how much it would cost in USA, China or Russia.
How do Nazis look at Euro-Mediterranean (italians, greeks, portuguese, spaniards)? Once I heard a person (in movie) said things against blacks, jews and Italians. In relation to blacks and jews, I knew; but I not knew that italians (and others mediterranean) were looked as impure blood. A> Imagine if a Nazi confusing an Italian as Latin American and then spank him. How a Nazi can identify an italian, portuguese, greek, and spaniard, visually and immediately? Moreover, yet, how Nazis be able to know if some mediterranean is impure or not? B > Do Nazi-americans accept mediterranean and Slavs (polish, Russian, Rumanian, Finn, that have a Mongol blood) as member or only Anglo, Germanic, Scandinavians?
Do you think the Arizona Ethnic studies ban is Euro-Centric? Just graduating from a public school a year ago, I obviously know how they teach history. Little is mentioned about Asia's History, Latin America, and Africa..... Instead it is heavy on the United States (which it should), but the rest tends to lean on Europe's history. The Black Plague, King Henry, the wars, ect., so why is it horrible to tell the other perspectives? I understand that teaching overthrowing the government is horrible (which I doubt they teach that, knowing Conservatives, btw which I lean but I know their classic McCarthyism) then why don't they just change the curriculum if it's teaching that? Ethnic studies shouldn't be required, but if someone has an interest in learning about a certain culture as an elective what is so horrible about it? I'm a hispanic taking Asian Studies, I'm not a communist. Dustin, it doesn't Isolate anyone, like I stated anyone can take Chicano studies. I take asian studies. thorcorn, anyone can take Ethnic Studies. It's not like Chicano studies are Hispanic only. Bobbi- it's pretty hard to teach all of world history in high school, so they have their "core curriculum" which should focus on the U.S. because that's who we are. But if I (A Hispanic) for example wants to learn about Africa's history, why can't I? It doesn't divide people, anyone can take those classes all history connects together in the end anyways. Drixnot, by your logic we shouldn't have to have an art as a required class then (which many states do). Maybe U.S. History would be useless too, what does that have to do with your job? These courses are available to make a more rounded student, many classes taken in the public school really aren't needed by the work force, so if you use that arguement you'd get yourself nowhere. It's an elective no one is forced to take it. Pfffttt so U.S. History helps? Most jobs no, very few rare exceptions does it help. I don't need to know about George Washington to sell something. It's nice to know it though as an American. Music is only neccessary if you are going into music. Ethnic Studies can be useful if you are going into intelligence. You can make an arguement for all of them, but none of them are universal to every job.
Why does the American media neglect the majority of the Spanish People for the more "latin" looking Spaniards? I saw a Euro Cup match between Spain and another team, and the Spaniards looked different than whats portrayed in American media. Some of the players did look "Hispanic" but the majority of the players looked like regular Europeans. They didn't look Latino or Mexican at all. Some of them had that Antonio Banderas look, but it wasn't overblown like in his movies. Why does the American media only show that small handful of the Spanish population that has that "latino " look but neglects the rest of the population that looks European?
Stylish ladies of Yahoo....please help.? Can the stylish ladies of Yahoo Answers suggest some fashionable shirts and shoes to spruce up my wardrobe. Does anybody have any info on genealogical DNA testing? I have read about this through various resources and would like to know if anyone can reccomend a provider, type of test and provide cost information. I was born in Mexico, where my family has lived for almost a hundred years, but both my parents are white. Likewise I am white, but visibly ethnic. My father is Polish/Russian Jewish and my mother is adopted, but it is thought she is something similiar, and supposedly she is also Jewish. I'm wanting to know how European I am, how much "Jewish" (i.e. Middle Eastern non Euro centric) DNA I have and if I have any Latin or Hispanic DNA ( my father says they never mixed, but you never know) Any and all insight into this would be appreciated.
Why don't more African Americans like House Music? I have been enjoying house music, parties and clubs for 15 years. While there are notable African American House DJs there doesn't seem to be that much acceptance or enjoyment going on in the black community. Most of the fans, club goers and party attendees seem to be Caucasian/Euro, Latin or Asian. This seems strange to me as House Music is rooted in Disco, Funk and Soul. An AA DJ once told me that cultural homophobia keeps most AA males from enjoying or participating in the House Music community but that seemed to be a subjective comment. Can anyone clue me? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music I currently reside in Northern California and am from Metro New Jersey right outside of NYC.
If you could create an AP course/exam, what would it be? I would create AP Latin American History. Because I think many students would take it, (not nessecerily all Latin Americans, like how many American students take AP Euro History) What APs would you guys create?
in the World , You think Which culture is noble/lofty? latin/ Africa /asia/ euro/ or America
What happened To 1994 USA? Please convince me that there is 5-10 national team members that were missing from the USAvsHON game that at this moment would have been at this game who would have made a difference. I'll help Donavon, Altidodre, Bradley, Beasly and maybe two others ( not all getting quality time at there clubs ) but have 3 world class goalies. Now honduras W. Palacios, H. Thomas,D. Suaso, Figeroa ( U know from that goal) who are getting quality time at top league. I would believe the game would have been the same or maybe worse for the US. So what happened to 1994 Wynalda, Harkes,Stewart,Ramos,Lalas,Doley,Wergle,Balboa,Jones,Sober even H. Perez, and more I know what happened they lost to Brazil, but they played well very professional together any team friendly or legit. I told my self 10 yrs from now 94 the usa a top 10 world team. Seeing the influx of immigrants Caribbean, latin, asian, euro, african I mean we are the melting pot why not the ultimate team. but what do I see I see an Aborigine and Finch catalog, college kids american college style college coaching. jWe are better than that we are american. We hope they are not selling an image, those in charge I hope they are not the ones who thought david beck to the MLS was great way to learn soccer, I hope it wasn't to make money, I don't know but I know there are better players than this. there qualification to the cup wasnt an excellent show, but their going , but how far will they get.. Lucky if they get 2 Points How do U feel are we on course to win the cup or failure. Is this the best we can find.

So why are we so upset with our political leadership? So why are we so upset with our political leadership? President Bush’s current approval ratings are about 32 percent. Only one in four Americans approves of the Democratic-controlled Congress. So why are we so upset with our political leadership? Despite the housing slump, it is not the worst of times. After all, the economy is still strong, with low inflation, low unemployment, low interest rates, and respectable growth. The Iraqi war remains unpopular, but good news has emerged recently about the surge and Iraqis joining Americans against the terrorists. We haven’t had another 9/11, and the Europeans — especially France and Germany — seem far friendlier. Instead, our anger with our political leaders more likely originates over money — or rather the lack of it. Americans believe that their rich country is either going broke or is seen as a global spendthrift that can’t pay for what it charges. And the worry over insolvency gets worse at a time of conflict — which, as the Roman statesman Cicero once remarked, is often decided by money, “the sinews of war.” We are currently servicing $9 trillion in aggregate national debt. China and Japan alone hold over $1.5 trillion in U.S. dollar reserves — the result of a general American trade deficit that usually runs about $700 billion per year. The euro — pegged at less than 90 cents to the dollar in early 2002 — is now over $1.40. And the historically weaker Canadian dollar now roughly equals the value of our own. Oil prices were around $22 to $28 in 2000, and are now over $80 a barrel. Over the past seven years Middle East oil exporters — many hostile to the United States — have raked in well over $1 trillion in windfall profits. The annual budget deficit is shrinking but still will come in this fiscal year at about $160 billion. Economists and government officials, of course, attempt to explain away all this red ink. Creditor nations, they remind us, simply lend us back money at relatively cheap interest to keep buying their goods. So they can’t really call in their debts without ruining their own best market. Where else are Japan and China going to bank their profits but in the politically stable, transparent and honest United States — an atoll of security in a world of political upheaval and corruption in Africa, Latin America and Asia? Meanwhile, our weak dollar supposedly makes American goods more competitive and keeps employment here strong as we export products and services to dollar-laden customers. In any case, despite European trade surpluses in the last few years, the United States economy has outperformed the European Union’s, and our standard of living remains much higher. True, oil is outrageously expensive. But in real dollars it cost more in 1979, when petroleum also took a much larger bite out of the total United States economy. Billions of dollars in annual deficits are scary, but as a percentage of our gross national product the current yearly shortfall is not historically that alarming. Still, there are problems with these easy rationalizations about charge-it America. First, we will have to spend trillions of dollars for unfunded Social Security and Medicare commitments in the next few years as our population ages. Ever fewer workers must support more lavish benefits for ever more retirees. Our military has put off necessary plane and ship replacements, and needs billions to replace worn equipment. At home, neglected bridges, roads, airports and railroads need even more money in fresh investment. So we should be saving now, not going into debt, for an upcoming nasty date with fiscal reality. Even more critical is the toll on our national psyche. Americans don’t like to read that they are borrowing to pay their annual bills, borrowing to import their gas, borrowing to buy Japanese cars and Chinese consumer goods — and passing on the ever-larger tab to their children. When they go abroad they feel embarrassed that their currency is weak — and getting weaker. They are bothered by global whispers that our houses and cars are too large, and that we consume in a manner we haven’t earned. So our collective debt is not just a problem of fiscal sustainability, but also one of national pride and security. Especially at a time of war, the perception of strength — political, financial, and military — is critical to our success. Instead, Bin Laden screams that we are spoiled and decadent. Europe chimes in that our national character is profligate. An ascendant China hopes that if present trends hold, even our military power must — as was true of the cash-strapped British in the 1950s — shrink to meet fiscal realities. So shamed Americans wait in vain for a leader to tell us that the government will balance its ledgers — and that we the people must spend less and invest more now while we can, rather than later when we must.
Is Barry in over his head? Can't sell his multi-trillion dollar government run healthcare Breaking his "no taxes pledge" - Cigarette taxes, more to come Embarrased by euros, latins, russians, scots Trashing our allies while hugging communists and leftist dictators Multi trillions in pork filled political payback in multigenerational debt Waffling like a mofo on Afghanistan Crap and Tax - $1800 per family MORE in energy costs

I want to be a cardiologist? Ok, i am really stressing out about my decisions now. Should have I have studied more, should I have used time more wisely, and did i choose a good schedule; are all questions that add to this conundrum.I am currently a senior in high school and i am getting all a's in my classes, but i am wondering if i choose the wrong classes. I am enrolled in Art history, euro history, Latin American History, and Eco this year. Those are all social studies classes! As besides that, i am taking precalculus, physics, and english, all honors. I study constantly but i wonder if it is enough. For the last three years i did not study like i do now. My essays are bad, but i am well rounded academically. Any advice would help
Paris Hotels: Narrowed it down to 6 choices, which should I pick? I'm in my mid-20s and will be in Paris for a few nights in August. I've narrowed down my hotel choices to 6 - can you help me decide? Close walking distance to sights is important as is nightlife right by the hotel. All of these have AC. Thank you! 1) Hotel Tourisme (66, Av. de la Motte-Picquet; about a block from the Eiffel Tower): 85 Euros, corner double room with bathtub 2) Le Relais du Marais (76 Rue De Turbigo; Marais area): 87 Euros, standard double room with shower 3) Grand Hotel Leveque (29 rue Cler; Rue Cler area): 90 Euros, standard double room with shower facing back of hotel - I heard it can smell like cheese from the fromagerie close by? 4) Hotel des Mines (125, Boulevard Saint Michel; Latin Quarter): 85 Euros, double room with bath 5) Hotel Residence Monge (55, rue Monge; close to Notre Dame): 88 Euros for double room with shower 6) Atel Louvre Marsoiller Opera (13, rue Marsollier; 5 min walk from Louvre): 100 Euros for double room with shower
Who's next on the 0bama Apology Tour? Lessee... Barry bent over for Euros, the Latin Americans, Saudi Arabia (literally!), the Muslims, Hamas, the Iranians, the N. Koreans.... Is Barry running out of folks to apologize to? Who's next?! Metal Mike.... no way.. we're going to make sure the adults regain control in 2010 and make 0bama's "Change" a bad memory.
Traveling to paris CDG...need help with getting to my hotel? I am planning on flying to CDG in a week. my hotel is in the south of the Latin quarter. I'm staying in Marriott Rive Gauche Hotel located at 17 boulevard Saint Jacques. I will have one piece of luggages. I really rather not pay 50 euros for taxi. What are my other options?
School Troubles? I'm in my second year of high school, and my situation at school is deteriorating....my grades for this semester are most likely: Algebra II: C Latin: C AP Euro: F (possibly a low D) Honors English: C Honors Chem-Bio: B Engineering Tech: B+ My parents were angry enought with the grades I recieved last year, but now they will surely be enraged! I've tried explaining my dilemma to them, but it only discourages me more when they send me on a guilt trip..... If I were to "kill myself" in order to get A's and B's this next semester, would I have any chance of making it into a decent college, or will I be stuck as a worthless do-nothing like they describe me as?

What AP Courses should I take my junior year? As of now, my schedule looks something like this... 1 - band/orch 2 - ap chem 3 - lab/gym 4 - ap euro 5 - hnrs latin 4 6 - ap psych 7 - ap eng 8 - hnrs precalc 9 - newspaper I would also like to take Greek as an independent study but feel that it would be too much. Should I take AP English Language or Honors? Should I drop AP Psych for AP Eng? Will I be overloaded? How many AP courses should I be taking junior year? What courses should I be looking at if I want to get into Lehigh, Vassar or NYU and am interested in a philosophy, anthropology, or classics major? I like Dartmouth, but I don't think I'll get in. I need some advice! I'm in the top 1% of my class and have loads of extra curriculars.
Should I graduate early from High School? I can't stand it here anymore. I can easily graduate earlier, I just would need to take a lot of classes next year. But I'm afraid I need more time to mature for college. But then again, when I imagine two more years here with my family, and in my high school. It is really hard to imagine. I signed up to take college classes at the college branch so I'm not at the high school all the time, but still. I always am thinking about college and how I want to be in college already. I just don't know what to do or think anymore. It is getting really hard. Maybe the summer will set me straight. I'm in all Honors classes, I have a 3.97 weighted, and a 3.3 unweighted. I got a 23 on my ACT, but I know I can score way higher. I got a 10 on the writing, and I plan to work a lot harder on the multiple choice, because I didn't prepare for it last time. And if I decided to do this, my schedule would be like: AP Stats AP Gov and Econ AP English 11 AP English 12 AP Euro Chemistry PreCal Latin III Well, at our school, if you are graduating early you get all the senior privileges. Prom, senior skip, senior court, etc. And I mean I have plenty of friends, and what not, I just feel like I am going to lose it or have a mental breakdown sooner or later. and I am really ready to start life. And also, it is required to take english 11 and english 12 in the same year to graduate early. And plus, for the 12 AP test I have already read a lot of the recommended list. And they won't refer back to books in english 11... lol.
Am I Doing Well So Far To Go To....? Duke and/or Wake Forest. I'm already in a very academic school. Our science olympiad won state and all that stuff lol. Our school is in the top 30 in California i believe. Im going to be sophomore. Freshman year i took: Earth Science, Alg.1, Semi-advanced english class, world history, architecture class, latin, and tennis. I had straight A's in everything except for math (86/84%). In Earth Science i got 95/97%, English was 92/95%, arcitecture was 95%, latin was 96% i think. my first semester GPA was 3.80 and second was 3.83. Next year im taking Biology, Geometry, Sem-advanced english, technology classes, tennis, latin 2, and AP Euro (i chose to move up). So am i doing a good job right now to get to those two colleges listed above and how could i become more competative for a spot or a scholorship? mine-stupid moron *mime-stupid moron well i was in a volunteer club but didnt do anything lol. my teacher suggested i do next year (and i will). Why don't restaurants pay better so that tips are included in the price? Having lived abroad, I have come to appreciate the more professional way other cultures treat the people who serve them in restaurants. In Germany, to be a waiter requires training and a period of internship. The waitstaff in the restaurants we frequented did not change. The prices on the menu not only included the tax but enough to pay the servers a good wage. Yes, we might leave an extra euro or two but certainly not 20% as expected in the States. The price on the menu was the price you paid, no surprises and no extra. All the waitstaff was professional and did their jobs well. If not, they just didn't make it in the profession. The good ones even let you sit and drink your coffee leisurely. They were not trying to hustle you out in order to get another 20% tipper in. The more people that can be herded through an American restaurant, the more money the waitstaff earns. Not so in Europe or Latin America.
Messed up freshman Year? Here are my grade: (i am current;y a sophemore) Freshmen Year: GPA:3.36 English: A- Algebra: A- Health: A- Euro History 2: B- Latin Amer and Carib: A Animation:A- Chemistry: B Latin 1: B PS -i messed up my fresh. year because i didnt care bout school then Sohp. Do you think that my chances of getting into a good college are partially ruined b/c of my fresh year? What colleges do you think i can get into? (i am looking to becoming an orthodontist/ oral surgeon maybe, but at least something in medical field). You guys all say i'm fine, but remember i want to become maybe i surgeon, and i want to go to a good school (like top 30 schools). Are your freshman grades important in high school? Here are my grade: (i am current;y a sophemore) Freshmen Year: GPA:3.36 English: A- Algebra: A- Health: A- Euro History 2: B- Latin Amer and Carib: A Animation:A- Chemistry: B Latin 1: B PS -i messed up my fresh. year because i didnt care bout school then Sohp. Do you think that my chances of getting into a good college are partially ruined b/c of my fresh year? What colleges do you think i can get into? (i am looking to becoming an orthodontist/ oral surgeon maybe, but at least something in medical field). next year i iwll porlly go into 2 AP courses, and have a GPA of about 4.4 ish hopefully. Actually our school is very estute and if you take level 1 lasses (harder classes) then you get an extra point on your GPA. ex: you get a B in level 1, its equal to an A in level 2. AP is the same, but its even harder (college courses). And, yes, you can get a 5.0

When Ex-Mexican President Fox said he and Bush were long term planning a regional currency, what did he mean? http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0710/08/lkl.01.html "KING: E-mail from Mrs. Gonzalez in Elizabeth, New Jersey. "Mr. Fox, I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency?" FOX: Long term, very long term. What we propose together, President Bush and myself, it's ALCA, which is a trade union for all of the Americas. And everything was running fluently until Hugo Chavez came. He decided to isolate himself. He decided to combat the idea and destroy the idea... KING: It's going to be like the euro dollar, you mean? FOX: Well, that would be long, long term. I think the processes to go, first step into is trading agreement. And then further on, a new vision, like we are trying to do with NAFTA." Does that sound like a plan you'd like? A plan that maybe should have been circulated here, for discussion, first? What do you think?
Should I take APUSH? I'm going to be a junior and I'm wondering if its a good decision to take apush along with AP chem, AP calc c, hon. eng., hon. bio., and orchestra. if i don't take apush i'm considering taking latin 4. is it a better choice to take apush than taking latin 4? i took AP Euro. last year and got a B+ and the AP scores aren't in yet....so can't decide....please help!

Obama's Pastor & Black Liberation Theology (A Blog Response) Please state your thoughts? Black Liberation Theology is not the only Liberation Theology movement among minorities. Blk Liberation assumes Blk people speaking for themselves as in the case of Feminist Liberation Theology, Asian Liberation Theology and (the most popular) Latin Liberation Theology. Most accuse Liberation Theology of having Marxist overtones or suggestions but I have not found that to be true. Most Liberation Theology movements are really "voices from the margins of society" who speak directly to a people who experience systematic, racial, gender discrimination or biases. (Some Evangelical Scholars make the case that Liberation Theologies are reactionary movements, I still disagree with that). (HERE IS THE MAJOR POINT) Most of what we consider Standards Biblical Interpretation is based on Euro-centric Evangelical models. (I will blog often on this site please ask if you want specifics). WHY IS THIS: Most published conversations (books and commentaries) about theology are based in Europe (Germany, England, Spain and Italy). I have been to seminary so I know this for a fact: MOST OF THE STUDY OF CHRISTIAN HISTORY IS BASED IN EUROPE. However, Europe was not the only continent to make global contributions to Christianity. (A BASIC POINT ABOUT THEOLOGY) Theology is not simply based on DIRECT DIVINE INTERPRETATION. Everyone who interprets a text, just as in literature, brings their history, experience, and world views to the table. This is called a HERMANUTIC OF SUSPICION. (Lord I wish I had a spellcheck. lol) Since most conversations about theology are from European males and based on Euro male interpration of scripture and CHRISTIANITY, NATURALLY people who have different world views, experiences and come from different traditions are going to feel isolated. LET ME HELP YOU: DECONSTRUCT LIBERATION MOVEMENTS (Most liberation Theologies scriptural interpretations are informed by a particular groups experiences of oppression, cultural perspectives, collective history) IN STUDYING LIB. THEOLOGY HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT KEY ASPECTS TO FOCUS ON: 1. Literary Interpretation of CHRIST as a Divine HERO THAT OVERCOMES OVERWHELMING OPPRESSION FROM THE SYSTEM (Rome and Jesus' own people) Think of a super hero figure like Superman, Batman and etc. 2. JESUS WAS BORN IN A LOWLY MANGER OF HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Look for an "underdog" interpretation of scripture. References are ussually made to the fact that there was no room in the end or the Son of God had no place to lay his head. 3. CRUCIFIXITION & RESURRECTION Literary interpretation, Jesus died speaking truth to power. (Healing the sick, raising the dead, bulking the establishment, and performing miracles on the Sabbath) He did not reject the mission to "bring the Kingdom of Justice and Truth down to earth as it already is in heaven." His goals to lift the oppress was pursued on the basis of principles and not outcomes. He (Jesus) did not care that his mission would lead to his eventual and inevitable death on the cross. Liberation Theology is not a theology that is based on any group claiming superiority over another, but it is about a particular group or ethnicity that has been marginalized by society speaking for themselves about theology. (Hermeneutic of Suspicion) JUST A QUESTION: 1. Does anyone get offended with the titles "Greek" Orthodox, "Russian" Orthodox, & "Roman" Catholic? Should people of different ethnicities be offended by such titles? 2. When Greek Orthodox have festivals that celebrate Greek Culture, Greek family structures, Greek Traditions, and Greek food, would you consider them separatist? 3. Let's look at other religious traditions. Should I feel uncomfortable going to a Mosque or a Synod because both religions are so closely tied to culture that it is hard to distinguish one from another? Should we call Jew's separatist because of they have "family ethics" that are particular to Jews. (My grandmother is Jewish) Is seperatist a "pretty new" title for denominations or church communities that I am not comfortable or familiar with? Say what you will about Dr. Jeremiah Wright, but he is right on one thing. "If you are going to talk about Theology, you must talk about it in context." I have read Sean Hannity's bio. He attended a catholic high school that called itself a seminary.(It is no longer in existence. It closed in the 1980's). He also did not even finish a 2 yr college. Sean has NO experience or understanding of theology and it was obvious. I do not understand how FOX let's it's analyist/journalist get away with that. Dr. Jeremiah Wright probably came across as rude because Sean came across as if he were not really interested in interviewing Dr. Wright. It seemed to me that he wanted to expose an agenda. FOX really should demand better. Why couldn't they have atleast found a conservative journalist who understands "a little" about Blk Liberation Theology and it's prominant authors (Dr. James Cone, Dr. Dwight Hopkins, Dr. Cain Hope Felder). PURE AND SIMPLE Sean Hannity provoked a DOG fight with a Pit-bull. His little smart Alex comments, "Pray for me Reverend" and calling his church a cult before the Pastor even got a chance to explain what the website was about. Then when the Reverend tried to explain, he cut him off on several occasions. Sean was GRANDSTANDING. I guess that is what brings in great ratings!! I think a "properly" seasoned journalist WHO HAS AN ACADEMIC BACKGROUND IN JOURNALISM as well as experience would have handled that differently and the outcome would have been different.
Chavez, Ahmadinejad say "US power on decline" Is this true? Will oil reach 200 a gallon" if? there is an attack by the U.S.? Have we bitten off more than we can chew in the Middle East? (part of an article from The Associated Press) November 17, 2007 "God willing, with the fall of the dollar, the deviant U.S. imperialism will fall as soon as possible, too," Chavez said after a two-hour closed meeting with Ahmadinejad, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported. As the dollar weakens, oil prices have soared toward $100 a barrel. Chavez said at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that prices would more than double to $200 if the U.S. attacked Iran or Venezuela. "The U.S. empire is coming down," he told Venezuelan state television, calling the European Union's euro a better option and saying Latin American nations were also considering a common currency. . ah the question was whether or not oil would reach "200 dollars". I didn't ask for a spanking for having asked a question! . whatever are you squawking about buttfor2 !!!!

Mexican History vs. European History? I have a question for the group... I am taking a cultural studies course on Latin America and the Caribbean this semester. It is really interesting and I've enjoyed the first few days of class. My professor is Hispanic. He teaches well although he appears to be heavily anti-European. He speaks of Cortes with absolute hate & I can understand why, as Cortes was not a nice guy. My professor often refers to the advanced culture of the ancient Mexicans, for example the Mayans and Aztecs. He states, matter-of-factly, that the MesoAmerican civilizations were not only advanced, but much more advanced than the Europeans. I have no stake in this but I have my doubts that the MesoAmericans were more advanced than the Europeans. I think my professor is just proud of his heritage, which he should be, but he is kind of harsh towards the Europeans. Maybe he is right, maybe he is wrong, I don't know. I just want the truth. Were the MesoAmericans more advanced than the Euros?
responses for 'people travelling abroad for cheaper plastic surgery'? I recently received some answers for the question ‘has anyone ever travelled abroad to get cheaper plastic surgery?’ But the people profiles are closed as the question has timed out, so I haven’t had a chance to email some people back! There were three people I wanted to speak to: 1)a guy who said his girlfriend had had an operation in Mexico 2)Somebody who said she went to Germany to get it done for 3,500 euros 3)A plastic surgeon who said he was currently treating someone who had had botched surgery in Latin America. If this is you, could you please get back to me?
Raising grades possible? (high school)? I'm a sophmore in high school. The end of third quarter is approaching, and these are how my grades stand: Gym: A (no Sh**) Latin: 76% Engineering Tech: A (blowoff) Honors English: D (We've turned in about 2 assignments) AP European History: D Honors Bio-Chem: 78.3% Algebra II: C As you can see, the situation is pretty dire in English and Euro. history. I'm falling behind in my work in European history, and still haven't turned in a reflective journal on a book we read in English. It seems that my work is flooding me and I can't get anything in on time. Luckily, my European history teacher isn't too strict, and lets us turn stuff in late. I just need some advice as to how I can get all of this stuff done? I'm involved in a sport and an instrument, and its pretty safe to say that expectations are high in both of these as well! If I slip up in either, all hell will break loose by the end of this school year.
Twenty Somethings: Dinner / Partying in Paris? Two friends and I will be backpacking through Europe this summer, and we will be in Paris on Friday 1st of June - my friend's 25th birthday. We have about 100 euros to splash out with to celebrate the occasion - maybe a bit more, but we're skint students :^) Thing is, I have been to Paris before, but I don't know of any REALLY good places to go eat (that aren't tourist traps), or maybe even go drinking / dancing. Any suggestions would be appreciated - nothing TOO expensive (we won't be expecting to dine at a 5 star Michelin rated restaurant or anything). We'll be staying in the Latin Quarter, on the Left Bank - so anywhere within walking distance would be fab (otherwise if we had to travel with the metro/bus, that would be fine). We're specifically thinking of somewhere either cosy & charming, or maybe more cosmopolitan / young. Dinner, drinks, maybe some dancing.... Any ideas?! 100 Euro isn't ALL we're willing to spend - that's just what we have that we're willing to BLOW (especially on our friend). Of course, we will add to that if need be (which will be inevitable I suppose).
Why is the DREAM Act unfair, irresponsible and disastrous if it is adopted? Many leaders of both parties in Congress are pushing for the DREAM Act, which would grant reduced tuition and legal permanent residency to possibly millions of students who have been in the United States illegally. Why is the DREAM Act unfair, irresponsible and disastrous if it is adopted? College tuition has skyrocketed in recent years. Many Americans cannot afford college or have taken out student loans. Should the United States neglect its own citizens and subsidize the education of students who are here illegally? Proponents of the DREAM Act argue that parents of illegal students have paid taxes and that the United States should invest in them. The hard truth is that most illegal workers, due to their low-incomes, do not pay enough taxes to offset the cost of educating their children in American public grade schools. This cost can exceed $9,500 per child per year if the student receives the so-called bilingual education, not to mention the costs of other social services. Furthermore, rewarding illegal foreign nationals can only lead to higher illegal immigration. The misnamed “Immigration Reform and Control Act” of 1986 granted amnesty to 3 million illegal migrants. Presently, we have an estimated 12 to 20 million illegal migrants in the United States, without counting their children born here who are U.S. citizens. There were “1.8 million undocumented children in local school districts” across the United States, according to a report published by Business Week Online April 7, 2006. Billions of bonds in recent years have been passed to fund our schools. Is borrowing into the future a responsible solution? Open border advocates claim that money spent on the Iraq war and taxing wealthy individuals in the United States could generate plenty of resources to pay for costly services provided to foreign-born newcomers and their U.S.-born children. But the impact of exploding immigration-driven population growth is more than fiscal. If we grant amnesty to millions of illegal students, once naturalized, they could petition for their parents and siblings to immigrate to the United States. In addition, they will have children born here. Those newcomers will consume energy and water, like all other residents, thus exacerbating our energy and water shortages. We cannot ignore the political impact of the DREAM Act. Many Hispanic activists pushing for amnesty have publicly stated: “Today, we march. Tomorrow, we vote.” During last year’s massive demonstrations across the United States, many protestors were waving Mexican flags and pressuring the United States with demands identical to Mexico’s. Considering that in recent years, our national elections were very close, it is unlikely that our immigration laws will be seriously enforced in the future if millions of newly naturalized citizens promoting open borders are able to vote in our future elections. Should we allow migration to strongly influence our elections and policies? The U.S. population has quadrupled since 1900, from 76 million to 303 million. In the last 15 years alone, over 50 million people have been added to the United States mostly due to immigration-derived growth! If our population continues to grow at the rate of last decade, by 2100—within the lifetimes of today’s children’s children—the United States will have India’s current population. Do Hispanic legal residents really want the United States to become another Latin America, India or Philippines, the corrupt, overpopulated and impoverished nations that they or their ancestors left? Latin America has 37 billionaires. Why shouldn’t they and other countries work to improve life for their own citizens? Congress must realize that the United States is now the greatest debtor nation in human history, while China holds the world’s largest foreign currency reserves. We owe China $450 billion in federal debt. We also have the highest budget and trade deficits in the world. The Euro, weaker than the dollar 10 years ago, is now worth over $1.40. American students fall behind their counterparts in many countries in Asia due in part to an explosion of immigration-related enrollments: Many grade schools are overwhelmed with children speaking little to no English. Can this country remain prosperous if we have a growing semi-literate student population? Nationwide, over 75 percent of our adult cash welfare recipients are 20 to 39 years old. Some growers in Idaho and Colorado are using non-violent prisoners to replace illegal migrants. Isn’t it in the interests of Hispanic and other Americans to oppose the DREAM Act and other amnesty proposals, and to demand that our immigration laws be enforced as strictly as Mexico so that we can put all adult able-bodied welfare recipients and non-violent prison inmates to fill positions currently held by illegal migrants?

What are your thoughts of? this essay I have written for my AP Euro Class? I would like any criticisms or thoughts on it. I would appreciate if the entire text was read. Thank You for taking your time to read this. I'll try and fit it below: European Study Civilizations have always learned from one another to improve their own societies. Humanists studied the texts of ancient philosophers from Greek and Roman times and at their height the Egyptians were mimicked constantly. This is no different from present day and past Americans studying the history of Europe. People are not born with the knowledge of forming governments, stable economies, or even how to celebrate culture. Obviously, people, no matter how advanced, depend on others. We, as Americans, study European history because the foundations of our culture, choice of government, and our economic success is all in result of what the Europeans gave to the United States. Most Americans are descendants of European ancestry and America was founded and controlled by separate European Nations. Therefore, American culture is highly influenced by Europe; clothing, music, movies, and holidays alike. American buildings, such as the white house, depict columns similar to the ones found in ancient Rome. The advanced knowledge of how create support for structural building was adapted from Rome and without such basic know how, the United States would be no where near as advanced as today. The English language is absolutely European and America would be completely different with out the use of the Latin derived language. For example, the bible, without being translated into so many different languages, would not have made religion spread so quickly in America. Culture and communication within society in America is European, and without study of Europe the United States would lack all. When the thought of how a country runs comes to mind, government and politics immediately jump out. Why read The Prince or study the reasons why so many great empires fell? The answer being obvious, without learning of Europe’s history, America would be doomed to repeat the same mistakes. By adapting to a Republic or democracy, America has fulfilled its stance of being a great power and nation which would not have happened if not for the observations of other successful governments. America looked to Machiavelli, Plato, and many other influential Europeans to form an effective government that provides freedoms to its people. Te United States has only had one Civil War and the reason being a good form of government that placates to the people. Economy is not only what people want or need; it is the process of actually getting those wants and needs. Trade can be simple, International trade with other nations is not so simple. America has learned where, what, and when to trade goods and most importantly how to make the process efficient. Without the help of Europe in gaining this knowledge, The United States would be far less successful and society would be far less happy to live in a nation with less of what is wanted. Overall, economy is necessary to make a nation and the people strong and this general idea is European. We, as Americans, study European history because the basic foundations of our culture, government, and economy are adapted from Europe in order to make the US a prosperous nation. Without influence from Europe, America simply would not be the power it is today. In studying European history, the US managed not to make the same mistakes in wars and rulings (government) that past countries had. Overall, America learned, educated, and adapted from Europe to uphold the nation’s standing as one of the leading countries in the world. America has proven to be smart, but can be only as smart as the people that were learned from. This education has allowed the United States to cultivate into a great power, but America’s founders ironically are just as powerful. To Wizzie: I gladly would of put more detail and facts into this essay if it were meant to be 5+pages. My teacher asked for a quick essay answering a basic question. I respect your opinions and I certainly do not think America is the best country in the world. The purpose was just to emphasize how euro. made it a good nation. Thank You! =D

Is It Time to Believe Now? October 26, 2006, 9:28 a.m. Funeral for a Tyrant A morally disorienting gathering in Havana. By Otto J. Reich This time the rumors are real: Castro is dying of stomach cancer. He may have already died, even before the funeral preparations were finished, so the news is not out. Confirmation of the terminal illness comes from the usual sources but in a non-conventional manner. The Cuban government has been summoning to Havana representatives of the major international media to negotiate the best seats, camera angles, and interviews with the despot’s political survivors, and to inform them of the ground rules for coverage of the state funeral. The foreign media are being told that the model for Castro’s funeral is that of Pope John Paul II a year ago. The Cubans actually believe — or pretend — that the death of a tyrant deserves the same attention as that of the world’s great men of peace. This is one of Castro’s lasting legacies to his countrymen: moral disorientation. The Cuban ruling class has been so isolated from reality for so long by fear and Castro’s airtight press control that they equate the burial of a mass murderer with that of a prince of the Church. No doubt there will be “dignitaries” at the funeral: fellow revolutionary leaders from the last repressive regimes on Earth: Iran, North Korea, Syria, and Sudan, for example; and leaders of failed states like Zimbabwe and Bolivia; and representatives of the world’s resentful Left and the Hollywood Left (pardon the redundancy). Some examples of distinguished invitees will include terrorists whose organizations once instilled panic in entire populations but are now forgotten except to their victims. Many of them were trained in Cuban camps back when Castro called for world revolution and predicted he would outlive capitalism: Argentine Montoneros, Uruguayan Tupamaros, Nicaraguan Sandinistas, Salvadorean FMLN, Colombian ELN, MIR, FARC, and others; Chileans, Brazilians, Guatemalans, Angolans, Ethiopians, Palestinians, Syrians, even Vietnamese. The list is virtually endless. Not long ago, Castro himself admitted publicly to having “supported wars of national liberation in every country in this hemisphere with the exception of Mexico”. I believe everything except the exception; his hand has been present in much of Mexico’s violence as well. One security problem the Cubans will face is that some of the “revolutionaries” who they trained in techniques of assassination, torture, kidnapping, bank robbery, explosives, and other tricks of the trade now hate each other and may use the occasion to settle old debts. The explosions heard in Havana may come not only from ceremonial cannons. The guests will have to be carefully screened for poisoned-tipped umbrellas and other Cold War artifacts. Among the guests coming to Havana for the Third-World Burial of the Century will be Western capitalists anxious to see how they can exploit Cuban workers, who are assigned to the employer by a Cuban state entity which then collects the salary and delivers five percent — yes, five percent — to the worker and keeps the rest to pay for the expenses incurred by the generous socialist state. There will be the bottom feeders of the capitalist world willing to go anywhere or do anything for the Almighty euro or peso. You know the ones, those who have given capitalism a bad name, the exploitation of man by man, and whose example is in turn used by the revolutionaries against the good capitalists. There will recognizable faces of American and other TV, oblivious to the irony of “covering” a press event orchestrated by a government which has not allowed a single free or independent newspaper, magazine, radio or television station for almost five decades. Caught up in the spectacle of the funeral, the smiley faces of the free world’s morning shows, the “serious” news readers of evening newscasts, of 24-hour news channels and “prestige press” will unlikely mention the “Ley Mordaza” (literally muzzle law), law number 88 of 1998, which calls for penalties of up to 30 years in prison for any Cuban caught telling the foreign press of any flaw in Cuba’s economic or human-rights record. It is unlikely they will ask to interview the prisoners who have violated Castro’s Orwellian laws and are serving terms of as much as 27 years for committing journalism without a license or stating that the economy does not produce enough to feed the people. There may be international labor leaders in attendance, who will equally disregard the absence of any but the official Cuban Communist labor organization. Not wishing to offend their hosts, they will not mention the Castro law which condemns to eight years in prison anyone guilty of even attempting to establish a non-government labor union. On second thought: Why should they mention it now, when they have been silent for so many decades? Some of those leaders present may even be government officials from democratic states, having been elected in free elections such as the ones which disappeared in Cuba half a century ago. That irony will escape them also. Then there will be some genuinely elected Christian or social democrats, from Europe and Latin America. Those who have been silent about, and therefore complicit in, the longest dictatorship in this hemisphere’s history. A wise man once said that “All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” The history of Cuba in the past 50 years proves him right.
